What is the Role of Sedation in Dental Implant Surgery?

Sedation dentistry is the use of medication before and during a procedure to sedate you and ease your nerves. There are different types of sedation methods used for dental implant surgery that can keep you awake and coherent or leave you to sleep throughout your appointment. Consult with Dr. Nia to determine which sedation method will work best for your individual circumstances.

Preparing for Sedation and Implant Dentistry

During your consultation with Dr. Nia, she will review your medical history and discuss your eligibility to receive sedation for your dental implant surgery. Based on your discomfort level, she will recommend inhalation, oral or IV sedation. If you decide on oral or IV sedation, you will not be able to drive after your procedure, so you will need to arrange transportation from your appointment. For IV sedation, you will need to prohibit eating 12 hours before your surgery unless you are on a medication that is required to be taken with food. Dr. Nia will advise you on additional specifics once a sedation method is chosen.

Types of Sedation for Dental Implant Surgery

There are three different types of sedation that are implemented during dental implant surgery.

Inhalation Sedation

Also known as laughing gas, inhalation sedation is nitrous oxide that is mixed with oxygen and administered through a face mask that is placed over your nose. Once it is inhaled, it works to give you a more relaxed sensation to ease any tension you may feel before and during your procedure while keeping you awake throughout the process. Once the mask is removed, the effects of the gas wear off within ten minutes so that you can drive yourself home after your surgery. This is the most used and minimally invasive sedation method that is selected by many patients.

Oral Sedation

With oral sedation, you take a pill prior to your procedure. Also referred to as conscious sedation, the two medications used to for oral sedation are Triazolam and Diazepam. If you select this method, Dr. Nia will give you a prescription during your consultation for you to fill after your appointment. Then, you are to take the medication an hour before your surgery so that you feel relaxed and ready when you arrive. Depending on the dosage, you are likely to feel drowsy, groggy and may even fall asleep. However, you can be easily woken with a light shake or tap after your procedure.

IV Sedation

For intravenous sedation, drugs are administered to you and distributed throughout your body using an IV that injects the medication into your vein. This is done to get the drugs to work quickly, and it can be adjusted by Dr. Nia and the anesthesiology team as needed to ensure you are unconscious throughout the duration of your surgery.
