Full Dental Implants vs. Traditional Dentures
When you no longer have any of your natural teeth due to disease or trauma, it is important to replace them as soon as possible to prevent further problems with your oral health. In the past, removable dentures were the only option for doing so. That has changed in the past several years as dental implants have become the preferred option for replacing missing teeth. Patients appreciate the numerous benefits of full dental implants over removable dentures, including the fact that the dental implant procedure replaces missing roots as well as teeth.
When you meet with Dr. Bahar Nia, she will complete a full examination of your jaw and let you know if you are a good candidate for an implant-supported hybrid bridge or full dental implants. She may be able to complete the latter procedure using four or six dental implant screws instead of one for each tooth.
Understanding Removable Dentures
Removable dentures are a two-piece appliance with a full row of artificial teeth attached to each one. You wear them all day long and remove them for sleeping. Most patients need to use adhesive gel on each of the dentures to enable them to stay securely in place. Every patient is unique and Dr. Bahar Nia cannot make a specific recommendation for tooth replacement until she examines you in person.
Are Full Dental Implants Right for You?
The American Dental Association states that the invention and growing widespread use of both full dental implants and partial dental implants is the most important advancement in dentistry over the past several decades. This method of tooth restoration differs from removable dentures and offers several unique benefits. Two of the most important distinctions between full dental implants and removable dentures is that the first type of restoration remains in your mouth permanently and it replaces missing roots. Some other important benefits to consider include:
- Implants allow for clearer speech than dentures do
- You do not have to remove implants, use adhesives, or clean them any differently than you would your natural teeth
- There’s no fear of your teeth accidentally falling out when you laugh, sneeze, cough, yawn, or speak
- You have far fewer food restrictions than you do with removable dentures
- Implants do not contribute to facial sagging as dentures sometimes do
To install your new implants, Dr. Bahar Nia first places four or six titanium posts into your jawbone. You will typically wait several weeks to months for your jaw to heal and wear removable dentures in the meantime. Your dentist will install your new replacement teeth once she feels satisfied that healing has taken place.
