What is Sedation Dentistry?
Sedation dentistry involves the use of medications to help patients relax and feel more comfortable during dental or surgical procedures. Sedation can be used for a wide range of treatments, from simple cleanings to more invasive surgeries. It ensures a pain-free experience and reduces any anxiety associated with dental procedures.
Types of Sedation Offered
At Buckhead Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, we provide several sedation options to cater to your specific needs and comfort level:
- Nitrous Oxide (Laughing Gas): A mild form of sedation, nitrous oxide is inhaled through a small mask placed over your nose. It helps you feel relaxed and at ease during the procedure, and its effects wear off quickly after the treatment is complete.
- Oral Sedation: For patients with moderate anxiety, oral sedation is an effective option. You will take a prescribed pill before the procedure to help you feel calm and relaxed. Although you may remain awake, you will be in a deeply relaxed state.
- IV Sedation: Intravenous (IV) sedation is ideal for patients with more significant anxiety or those undergoing lengthy or complex procedures. It is administered through an IV and provides a deeper level of relaxation, while still allowing you to respond to instructions.
- General Anesthesia: For patients requiring extensive surgery or those with severe anxiety, general anesthesia may be recommended. This option puts you into a deep sleep, ensuring that you are completely unaware and comfortable during the procedure.
